Ross Equipment offers a diverse portfolio. In addition to offering standard mining, drilling, landscaping and construction equipment, they also provide firefighting equipment and apparatuses to a number of fire departments and municipalities in the surrounding area. As a Pierce fire truck dealer, this is a substantial segment of their business, and they’ve supplemented their business by carrying versatile and reliable equipment like Chicago Pneumatic (CP) hydraulic breakers and pneumatic tools.

With two locations in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Elko, Nevada, Ross Equipment is a full-service dealer. With only 22 full-time employees combined at both dealerships, they are busy with a reach across both Utah and Nevada, not just the communities in which they’re based.

After 40 years, the Ross brothers decided to retire. So, in November of 2015, Drew Larsen, Clayton Berg and Ron and Cathy Jensen purchased the business. With the new ownership in place, employees say there has been a renewed sense of energy in the business.

“There is certainly a close-knit family atmosphere here and it is an unbelievable company to not only be at, but have a stake in,” says Larsen. “The Ross brothers have made this place an incredibly successful business for many years and we will make sure that continues.”

Ross Equipment works closely with Hi Country Sales for their equipment needs. They have had a close relationship with the distributor for 15 years. The relationship started, in part, because of Ross Equipment’s need for air tools. Hi Country Sales represents Chicago Pneumatic air tool suppliers in the United States, so it was a perfect match.

The dealership has been carrying CP air tools for as long as they have been open. The success of the air tools led them to purchasing air compressors, the entire CP lineup of air tools, rammers, hydraulic breakers and plate compactors.

“They are all high-quality products and our customers have always had and continue to have a great amount of success with all of the CP products,”

says Larsen.

“A majority of our customers ask for the CP products. They are very brand-specific, especially when it comes to our CP air tools. The main reason the customers want them is because they hit harder and perform with less pounding to their body, less fatigue.”

Ross Equipment is constantly working with Hi Country Sales to increase product availability as CP products typically end up shipping out as quickly as they show up on the shelves. Most recently, they purchased a few CP CPS 400-150 JD compressors. As soon as the shipment came, and before they could even display their new compressor, a concrete contractor customer came in and bought one right away. The customer’s plan for the compressor was to use a big concrete wall saw.

“The customer immediately liked what he saw with the CP compressor,” says Larsen. “For his saws, he bought the 400 so he could run constant air without any dips in performance.”

With each industry they serve, Ross Equipment has been successful, backed by top-shelf equipment. With new ownership underway, their venture will look to continue for many years to come.
