It’s no wonder why heavily populated cities have ever-changing infrastructure needs with a high volume of traffic constantly driving through – roadways and interstates rarely get a break. Ottawa—the fourth largest city in Canada with over one million people in the metropolitan area—is a vibrant and progressive city, as one would expect for the capital of Canada. As the infrastructure takes a beating, Ottawa has a revolving need for new roads and interstates to be constructed, and contractors there rely on Ottawa Rental and Supply (ORS) as their one-stop shop for all of their construction needs.

Headquartered in Kanata, Ontario, one of the largest suburbs in Ottawa, ORS offers rentals, new and used equipment, parts and service, and supplies. ORS —a young, but established company, only 5 years old—knew infrastructure needs would be at the forefront of the city with street and interstate repairs or complete overhauls. The company got ahead of it, investing a great deal of money into equipment and tools.

It was around that time that Chicago Pneumatic was looking for a dealer in the area. Jan Marcus, CP’s area manager of Canada, looked at dealers in the area and got in touch with ORS, discussing CP’s line of air compressors and pneumatic tools. It was a natural fit for both sides.

“We would like to say we have partnered with Chicago Pneumatic – we have taken them on as our only air provider and pneumatic tool carrier,” said Pat Kelahear, general manager of ORS for over four years. “We have worked with CP for over two years now. Jan came in and mentioned that they were looking for a dealer to support them, and ever since we became partners, we have been very successful with selling their line of pneumatic tools and air compressors as well as using them in our rental fleet.”

As infrastructure needs rise so do the handheld tools needed to get the job done. With that in mind, ORS purchased an abundance of pneumatic handheld tools back in May of 2013 from CP with a mixture of rivet busters and 15-pound chipping hammers.

“With the infrastructure improvements going on in the Ottawa area, we knew that there was going to be a huge demand for handheld tools, and there wasn’t a lot of the CP brand out in the area,” Kelahear said. “We felt we should try something new and see what feedback we got from our customers. Our company, as well as our customers, has had a lot of success with the rivet busters and chipping hammers – it has been a great addition to our rental fleet.”

DSC00623CP features four models of rivet busters, including two—the CP 4608 and 4611—that have the best power-to-weight ratios on the market. Originally designed for removing rivets and for various other metal applications, rivet busters are now also used for concrete demolition and bridge work, offering nearly the same hitting power as a 60-pound breaker with only half the breakers weight.  CP also has a lineup of over 20 chipping hammers that are designed for both construction and industrial applications from light to heavy chipping duties.

“CP is one of the market leaders and we expect a good life expectancy from their tools because they are built properly and parts are readily available when needed,” Kelahear said. “It’s been a good match and fit for us. We represent the brand very well and we believe that they have one of the best products on the market for sure. All in all, it’s been a great relationship.”

ORS has only had their doors open for a few years but is going about things the right way by putting its customers first. With over 50 years of combined experience, the company has seen solid growth and made wise decisions when it came to selecting equipment and tools with the customer in mind.

DSC00624As of June 2014, Canadian Business magazine—the longest serving, best-selling and most-trusted business publication in the country—ranked ORS No. 61 on the magazine’s annual PROFIT 500 – a definitive ranking for Canada’s fastest-growing companies. The PROFIT 500 ranks Canadian businesses by their revenue growth over five years and over that time period, ORS had a revenue growth of 1,192 percent.

“It’s been a pleasure working with ORS – they seek reputable companies with proven products to partner with, and it is the reason they chose to go with CP,” said Jan Marcus. “ORS has several concrete and restoration customers among many others that use the CP tools and demand nothing else on their job sites. CP tools are exceptional in the construction industry and are well known for being one of the most powerful and robust tools on the market; once you work with a CP tool, there is a definite difference in feel. We couldn’t be happier to have such a great partnership with ORS.”

ORS is moving forward and plans on expanding into Brockville, Cornwall and Kingston (all located in Eastern Ontario). Under the new name “Ontario Rental and Supply “ There’s no doubt that ORS is doing something right and Chicago Pneumatic is excited to be along for the journey with them.
