Our team hit the ground running to open up the first quarter
with World of Concrete (WOC), The Rental Show and wrapped up with CONEXPO-CON/AGG. The shows reaffirmed a notion I discussed in the previous issue of CP RedZone — the marketplace is beaming with confidence.

 

With nearly 200,000 attendees combined at the three shows, it was more than a good sample size to prove the market is steady and strong in both the rental and construction sectors. Customers not only need to buy new equipment for their fleet, they want to. An attitude like this will only help to build a stronger economy.

Heading into trade show season, we were uncertain how WOC and The Rental Show would turn out during a CONEXPO year. Neither disappointed. It was quite the opposite with our booth seeing heavy traffic at all three shows.

World of Concrete: Las Vegas, Nevada

With an outside booth space, WOC is a show our team looks forward to every year. This is because attendees can demo our new equipment right there on the spot. It not only leads to better interaction with attendees, but we also receive some great feedback from those testing out our machines.

This year, we launched several new products, including the RX12 light duty hydraulic breaker and three new power trowels. We brought the products to all three of the shows and they received a lot of attention.

The ARA Rental Show: Orlando, Florida

For the eighth consecutive year, The Rental Show saw increased attendance numbers. This includes 6,000 rental business attendees and 3,000 rental businesses. It was the most rental business attendees since the show’s 50th anniversary in 2006 and the most rental businesses since 2001. Not so coincidentally, all three of those shows — 2001, 2006 and 2017 — were in Orlando, a hotspot for the show.

The increased attendance pushed us to record sales figures this year. Typically, our team is busy writing quotes on the first day with customers coming back to close on the second and final days. This year we were selling right off the bat on the first day.

Each day at The Rental Show we awarded prizes to rental businesses. Our grand prize was the use of an RX4 hydraulic breaker for two years. It was awarded to Tates Rents of Boise, Idaho. They will be able to rent out this piece of equipment for two years at no cost to them.

In addition to the show, we hold our annual sales meeting the night before the floor opens. This is an opportune time for the CP team to come together with our manufacturer’s representatives to not only talk business, but also honor the hard work everyone puts in.

This year we recognized four individuals and one rep group for outstanding sales performance (see list here). I would like to take this time to thank our team and our reps for their dedication to CP and congratulate those who earned the awards.

CONEXPO-CON/AGG: Las Vegas, Nevada

No matter how many CONEXPOs I attend, I always come away impressed. The sheer size of the show, amount of manufacturers, and attendees from all over the world are a sight to see.

We launched some additional products, including the AR95 diesel roller, CPPG portable generators, inverters, an MV224 forward/reversible plate compactor, and our toughest compressor yet with the Red Rock CPS 110 portable compressor. These machines were built with the power and reliability that customers have come to know from CP.   

The last CONEXPO in 2014 was a good one, but this year’s edition was even better with a 10 percent growth in overall contractor and producer attendance. In total, 128,000 attended the show.

All in all, the three shows could not have gone more smoothly. We picked up some great leads and sold a lot of equipment over the past few months. Trade show season is behind us, but the impact the shows made will keep the momentum rolling here at CP.
